Organizing Education

We educate leaders.

Organizing education is about more than filling participants’ heads with facts. Each session we design is customized for your staff, volunteers, members or activists. From Organizing 101 to in-depth campaign strategy workshops, we can help activists build power and win campaigns. Along the way, they’ll build their own leadership and discover that they know more than they think they do. We also design custom sessions to address the most important topics for your organization.

We provide all elements of an organizing education program from one-off sessions to comprehensive programs, including:

  • Education needs audit
  • Program Design
  • Curriculum Development
  • Workshop and meeting facilitation
  • Train-the-trainer sessions
  • Post-session evaluation and debrief

Below are a few examples.

VAIPL leaders wanted to build on the organization’s strong reputation for advocacy and lobbying to create a culture of building power for climate justice. To get started, Mira designed a program of six workshops, from Organizing 101 to Organizing Strategy Development. A coaching session followed each workshop to help organizers apply what they’d learned.

Mira designed and facilitated a six-session campaign simulation for an inaugural leadership development fellowship program. Sessions featured discussions and interactive exercises on concepts and skills including comms, digital and field strategy as well as campaign design. And, just like real life, a surprise crisis for participants to navigate.

At Netroots Nation, Mira has co-facilitated two sessions. During “Unpacking Bias and Depolarizing Race and Class,” participants discovered some of their own implicit biases and discussed strategies to overcome them. The topic of “Someone Always Calls the Cops: When Karen or Chad Dials 911 on Your Canvassers” was reducing the risk and harm to canvassers of color when residents or police officers harass them.

At Organizing 2.0, Mira co-facilitated “Q&A Is Not Interaction” and “Disrupting Traditions of Oppression in Organizations.” Both sessions received top reviews. One participant called Disrupting “one of my favorites at the conference.”

We have designed and presented capacity-building sessions for many prominent organizations and campaigns, including:
